A beard of stars

With trepidation I headed towards the corner of Elizabeth Street and La Trobe Street. I had been told the public telephone was on the south-west corner. I lingered on the opposite corner until the appointed time, and then made my way towards the phone, dialed the number, and waited. A calm male voice answered: "Hello Xul Solar, please walk 40 paces west, and turn left into the laneway, then another 40 paces and you will find an establishment on your left. Goodbye".

I glanced around, mindful of being watched. Behind me was a mysterious building with blacked-out windows. Could someone be watching from behind this glass? I followed the directions and found myself on the outskirts of a labyrinth of alleyways. I located the doorway to the ROABGAB City Temple, an unusual choice of venue, I thought to myself. I looked like the doorway hadn't been used for decades, the sign was dated and dilapidated, the entrance strewn with litter and debris.

I entered and saw before me a dim stairwell leading down, faint throbbing music emitting from the darkness. At the bottom of the stairs I find thick, faded red curtains, which I push aside. An man sits at a small table, perhaps in his 60s, slightly overweight, greasy black hair, stubble, an ill-fitting grey suit. His face was certainly not inviting, his eyes weighted by lack of sleep, his thin lips pursed, his brow furrowed.

"You must be Xul" he says to me in a thick Balkan accent. I nod in reply. He unclips the rope barrier and motions me through. Inside, the room is dank and dark, lit by small lamps and the dizzying particles of a mirrorball. There are a sprinkling of patrons at the various booths and tables. I head to the bar. The barman is excessively tall, the shape of his head resembling Herman Munster. He wears a crisp white shirt and crimson tie. I ask him for a gin and tonic. As he fixes my drink he says "The people you are looking for are to the left, behind the palm trees".

I take my drink and head towards the booth behind a bunch of plastic palm trees. As I push aside the fronds, I see a man sitting alone at the table. He is in his late 60s perhaps, white hair specked with black, a neat wispy beard, round rimless spectacles and a waft of cigarette smoke exploring his wrinkled face.

"Xul, please take a seat, my name is Furriskey, John Furriskey" he says in an almost cheerful Irish accent. I slide onto the seat opposite him. He extends his arm towards me and reveals an open packet of cigarettes. It's a brand I'm not familiar with; Amber Leaf. He catches my quizzical look and proclaims "The finest cigarettes in Ireland". I accept his offer. He leans forward to light me.

"Mr. Solar, do you know why we've asked you here?" he inquires. I reply that I don't, and to be honest I thought it would possibly be a stitch up by some nutcase like Beltaine. "Xul, do you know what or who Neurocam is?". Again, I reply that I don't.

"Some take Neurocam to be a game, or an art project, and in a way they are almost right. The truth about Neurocam runs deeper than that. The assignments might seem like fun, like make-believe cloak and dagger, but there is a more ominous purpose to them. I cannot reveal any more at this point, suffice to say that you have chosen well to remain on the sidelines and not get involved".

I ask him who he works for, and what his interest in Neurocam is. He replies that he works for O'Rourke Investigations, who have been contracted to uncover certain facts about Neurocam. I ask him why he needed to meet me. "We would like you to undertake some work for us. You seem to be in contact with a number of operatives, and have somewhat gained their trust. At present, we simply require your acceptance. Think about this over the next few days. We will be in touch next week".

I swig down the last of my gin and extinguish my cigarette. We shake hands and I'm ushered out the door by the Balkan man. Back out onto the glistening streets, I begin my journey home, my head swimming in confusion.

Furriskey replies

A reply from Mr. Furriskey. Firstly, he mentions that he did not appreciate his correspondence being made public, and asks that if I must divulge information about our impending meeting, that I do it with discretion. The finer details will therefore be omitted.

On the agreed date, at the agreed time, I am to make a telephone call from a specified public phone. I will be given details on where to head from there, and have been warned that I will be under surveillance during this time. I am to attend the meeting alone, and am not to contact anybody during my journey from the phone to the venue. The phone number, I have been told, is an temporary anonymous number and will only be active within a five minute bracket of the agreed time (to allow for discrepancies between watch-settings, apparently).

This is all I can tell you at this stage. I am certainly intrigued, and am pondering whether this meeting will be worth the obvious risks involved. It is certainly worrying that I will be off Yellow Door's radar during this. Nevertheless, I doubt I will be in any danger - if Furriskey shares concerns for the safety of Tigermoth, I can't see how he would hold animosity towards me.

Sleepers awake!

I was awoken this morning by the intrusive discord of someone arguing with themself. After scrolling through a few more emails, my eyes fell upon a curious message. I have previously voiced my concern for Operative Tigermoth, of whom I have heard nothing since he was tasked with delivering an envelope to a Launceston newspaper a few months back. Today, I received this:

Who is Anja Farber?

Suspicions have been raised regarding the identity of Anja Farber. I've made a comment on Teigan's blog, which I thought I should expand on here.

Cheshire Cat has suspected that I am behind Farber; if only I had thought of it, but alas someone got in before me. Constance (NSFW) suspects Kristina (who's blog seems to have disappeared). I have my own suspicions - Beltaine's cover was recently blown in the RHNC/unowhoiam saga, and he may well be looking for a new identity to play with (and indeed, a quick link seems to have developed between them - Beltaine reports that he's been in correspondence with Farber).

There is also the possibility that Farber is legit. If Neurocam is an art project, then it's one that would have required substantial funds (the embedded safe, the billboard). Surely someone has to validate the project's effect, or success. Surely there must be some academic or research student monitoring the operatives and the blogs. Farber claims to be researching "new media narratives" and this surely connects well with both Neurocam and the interconnectedness of the Neuroblogs (especially the 'characters' of Xul, Methodius, RHNC et al).

A quick Google finds this 2002 article on Dr. Gregory Payne, an academic at Emerson College, which specialises in communications and the arts (sounds fitting). The article quotes one of his students, Anja Farber. Could this be the Anja Farber researching Neurocam? On her blog she claims Anja Farber is not her real name b ut that of an ancestor, but the inclusion of this information seems an afterthought, perhaps included once she realised the sleuthful nature of the people she was getting involved with.

Yellow Door and I arrived at DBA early. We took a table in a dark corner and ordered the finest Belgian trapist beers, as is our want. We discussed bream, Neurocam, and Heidegger. It was just as Yellow Door was expounding on his theory of Being And Time that we observed a tall, thin man enter the premises. He look nervously around the room, checked his watch, and lit a cigarette. Yellow Door and I quickly resumed our conversation. Thin Man took a seat at a table quite close by. He ordered a generic local lager not known for its eloquence. Yellow Door removed a notepad from his pocket and began taking notes, which I now present to you...

Suspect enters premises at 20:13. Attire - black denim jeans, Nike sports shoes, pink polo shirt (a colour currently being referred to as 'salmon' by the fashion industry). Hair - short and neat, light brown in colour. Suspect smoked 4 cigarettes (smoking method nowhere near the eloquence of Mr. Maxwell Knight). Subject leaves at 20:51.

We could only assume that this character was unowhoiam, but there also remains the possibility that we were 'stood up', and the Thin Man was merely an anonymous stranger.

The threats have been coming thick and fast. It seems there's an invisible army out there who wish me to cease my blogging activity. I'm not sure why, but I'd say these people are simply attention seekers, trying to piggy-back on my attention seeking. As yet, there has been no solid evidence that Neurocam wishes me to cease. In fact, I suspect that if the upper echelons of Neurocam did read this blog, they'd probably have a laugh, and then continue on with their work.

The critics all hide behind anonymity. Only Operative Sub-Xero has thus far shown his face as an Xul naysayer, and I thus respect his/her boldness.

The critic known as "unowhoiam" has posted another comment, still proclaiming to be Robin Hely. He's entered his website in with the Neurocam address, which will supposedly fool me. He's listed an email address - RobinHelyNC@hotmail.com - which I'm expected to contact in order to confirm that unowhoiam is actually Hely. The way I see it, unowhoiam, the onus is on you to prove your identity, not me.

And why hasn't he emailed me from a Neurocam address yet? As he says - "You dont think i would put a neurocam e-mail adddress up do you. You should know these are confidential" (not confidential enough to be used in all official Neurocam correspondence). And here lies the flaw in unowwhoiam's argument - for the real Robin Hely has denied any relationship with Neurocam, claiming to be an evicted ex-operative. Unowhoiam claims to be Hely and claims to hold links with Neurocam, he claims to hold enough sway within the organisation to offer me warnings of some undisclosed punishment.

What's more - the real Robin Hely, from everything I've read, seems like an articulate and well educated individual. He has taught at the Victorian College Of The Arts - Melbourne's most prestigious art school. Do you think such a person would create an alias with such a blatant spelling error - the real Hely would name himself "uknowhoiam" (I'll overlook the double use of the "w"). Do you think he would compose a comment with such disregard for grammar and punctuation?

Interesting to note that this charlatan has decided to extend his prank, emailing a number of operatives, as Avery has pointed out.

And some more "advice" from an anonymous poster - "I suggest you retire, You won't last long. That's advice". Nobody worth their salt would take advice from an anonymous source - I might as well read my horoscope if I was going to do that. "Virgo - the transit of Neptune suggests you should cease your Neuroblog. That's advice".

I apologise for this recent breaking of character. Xul Solar 23 will continue with the task of providing the biggest Neuroscoops in the near future.

Methodius, RH, and the Xul Solar Cheer Squad

Methodius has accused me of being a "a peddler of vague and tantalising half-truths and outright lies". I don't think there are many readers of this blog who don't realise what I'm all about. This character claims that my "obsequious misrepresentations must end now".

From all of this, you may have gathered that Methodius and I have had a little tiff. It all started quite innocently enough - I let Methodius borrow some of my secret recipe bait upon the proviso that anything he catches with it should be shared with me. On the Sunday 20th February, while we were fishing beneath the Bolte Bridge, Methodius caught the most beautiful yarra pygmy perch, and then refused to share the wealth. I was reluctant to bring this episode up on the blog, because what happens on the river stays on the river, as far as I'm concerned. But Methodius seems to have let this quarrel seep into the public sphere.

I also received a warning from "unowhoiam" stating that I must desist from my blogging activities. S/he states that "if you think you are anonymous by hiding behind a smoke screen of blogs then your are truely not worth bothering about anyway". The comment is signed "RH", which I presume is a meant to imply either Robin Hely or Robert Henley.

I hereby challenge RH to email me directly from a Neruocam account, and to send it directly to my personal email address. If s/he knows my true identity as claimed, this will not be a problem.

I must send a warm thank you to the Xul Solar Cheer Squad. I was unaware of their existence until this issue was raised.

Not only did Methodius and I have a splendid afternoon watching Neurocam fledglings scamper around the industrial wastelands beneath the Bolte Bridge last Sunday, but we also caught some decent macquaire perch. Methodius' stroke of brilliance was, of course, to disguise ourselves as fishermen. After a while we tired of the scenario, so Methodius called the Police "for a bit of a laugh".

In other Neurocam news, operative Learmonth has successfully completed his assignment of clearing out the Knox City Shopping Centre for a minimum duration of 5 hours. It is believed other Neurocam operatives were them able to deposit a package into a dead drop located within the centre's service corridors.

Maxwell Knight, meanwhile, has taken some annual leave to prepare for his yacht race with Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark.

Interesting to note that amongst the names recently exposed in the Paris Hilton Phone Hack scandal, are Maxwell Knight, Neville Harris, Bridget Fischer, and Charles Hastings. Could Paris Hilton be an operative? When you think about it, what does she do? This connection to the Hilton empire seems to have no effect on Hastings' choice of hotel, as his name was recently spotted in the guest book at Burj Al Arab in Dubai.

Much discussion regarding Wikipedia's Neurcam entry. Here is the text in question:

Robert Henly real name Howard Grant a sophisticated confidance man, is the alter ego of Robin Hely, a New Zealand born artist who garduated with honours from the VCA. Mr Hely was arrested in early febuary 2005 on charges of misappropriation, relating to an arts Victoria grant, intended for Shelly Innocence an art project run by Peter Burke a freind of Hely's. Supposedly this money was used to fund neurocams early advertising activities.

Now before y'all start accusing me of creating the passage, the history section of the page show that the culprit is someone using the IP 203.122.85.45, which you can see here. I'm unsure of how to trace IP addresses, but if someone could help me out, I'll send Methodius around to give you a scalp massage (and I can't begin to tell you what an expert Methodius is in that field).

Regardless, I'd like to draw your attention to a flaw in the passage - "Robert Henly real name Howard Grant a sophisticated confidance man, is the alter ego of Robin Hely". So his real name is Howard Grant, but his real name is Robin Hely. Huh? Clearly 203.122.85.45 has been drinking of the nectar de Listérine.

I apologise for my recent lack of posts. It seems that excessive ingestion of Listerine has had some debilitating effects on me. Last night is mostly a blur of cigarettes, red lingerie, and enlivened philosophical debate. It's a pity I had nobody to share it with.

I have arranged a meeting with mysterious interloper Methodius Umbrares. We have scheduled in a time for this coming Sunday. Methodius Umbrares tells me that he can secure a good vantage point for Sunday's much anticipated multiple-operative assignment. He has procured a bottle of the finest 2001 Pinot Noir de Franche Comte, and promises an afternoon of gossip, lies, and Neurocam in-jokes. I can't wait.

Operative Subnative has reported what could only be described as Neurocam's most intriguing operation yet. Subnative lives alone, and as far as he knows, nobody has keys to his apartment. On the night of Friday 4 February 2005, Subnative partook in one of his frequent rituals - a cigarette in bed. When he moved the sheets away he received a most arresting surprise - a red g-string. Could this belong to Ms. Bridget Fischer? Does the cigarette ritual have any bearing on the event (remembering here that Mr. Maxwell Knight is a smoker of renown sophistication). Can other operatives expect to find similar pieces of lingerie in their beds? And how will they explain this to their loved ones? Perhaps Neurocam see partners as unwanted impediments in the progress of operatives, and seek to drive them away. I know that I, and I'm sure most of you, will be checking beneath the blankets for any suspicious yet alluring surprises.

It appears obvious to me, that if Neurocam is involved in some kind of smuggling operation, they would choose to travel in style. A fishing trawler or aluminium ourboarder, or even the rented hull of a cargo vessel, would all be below the standards of style and fashion Messrs Knight and Hastings are famous for. Indeed, even the beautiful Ms. Fischer must surely be a woman of Bond-esque class and glamour. Only the sophisticated distinction of a luxury yacht would suit Neurocam's smuggling enterprises, whether it be brief jaunts to Tasmania or gun smuggling around Indonesia.

Several people have written to me regarding claims that Neurocam denies any association with myself and the operatives of which I write. I have one word for the naysayers - 'fanfic'. If you cannot ascertain truth from fiction, maybe you shouldn't be playing 'games' with Neurocam. If you can, then take everything, most especially this blog, at face value, and enjoy.

The same advice should be given to operatives engaging in the attempt to unravel the Young Atom / Anna Schmidt / Xul Solar 23 tryst. This is the last that will be said on the matter. I have far more important issues to write about. For instance, I am seeking information on the rumour that a Melbourne Neurocam operative was instructed to daub a residential house with the phrase "Informant 166". And why has the Neurocam webpage suddenly enabled its source to be viewable?

I have been informed that Operative Waxwing from Launceston, Tasmania, received an assignment from Neurocam quite recently. Waxwing was instructed to pick up a sealed envelope from a general store in a coastal town in Northern Tasmania, and deliver it to a Launceston newspaper. I feel I must respond in public to a personal attack made against me via email. The culprit will remain anonymous, as I do not sink to the same levels of baseness as my correspondent. The allegations that I am in some way involved in the Young Atom / Anna Schmidt prank are completely false. It seems a reader of a blog called Trysting Fields has made generous leaps of judgment and accused me of being the same charlatan behind the Anna Schmidt blog. When I investigated the Trysting Fields blog, I discovered the comment in question, which you can view here. If you will please note the name listed is Ken Dyers, yet the homepage is linked to the blog of retired operative Young Atom. I have it on good authority that Young Atom did not retire, as he has stated, but has been excommunicated from Neurocam due to revealing information that he should have held close to his chest. It seems Mr. Atom has been a little too loose-tongued, shall we say, in regards to his involvement in Neurocam.

It should also be noted that the pseudonym he uses, Ken Dyers, is involved in Kenja Communication, the 'cult' associated with Ms. Rau. A simple search of the Google News service reveals this fact. This adds fuel to my suspicion that Young Atom is behind the Anna Schmidt prank, possibly as a tactic of vilifying the Neurocam enterprise, in retaliation for his excommunication.

I am surprised that this attack has been made so quickly, following the arrival of my blog. I suspect Neurobloggers are up at all hours of the day, waiting to feed the misinformation machine. I have decided to publish this blog due to the fact that I've seen a vast gap in Neurocam coverage. I am in contact with operatives who are not part of the Neuroblog community, and who seem to receive assignments of differing calibre to the ones mentioned on the Internet. I will obviously have to take care as to where I step in this regard, as the world of Neurobloggers is one filled with spite and animosity.

Memories of Winston Gregory

Learmonth responded to my email just now in regards to Winston Gregory. He recalls Gregory's name being mentioned in a phone call Maxwell Knight made during his meeting with Learmonth.

I recall comments made by Operative Learmonth that, when he met with Maxwell Knight, he was astounded at the amount of cigarettes consumed by Mr Knight. Even though Learmonth does not smoke, he found himself so intoxicated by Knight's beautiful smoking manner, that he felt compelled to purchase a packet of Peter Stuyvesants at the next available opportunity. The meeting took place at a warehouse in Mordialloc. Learmonth was blindfolded during the journey but was told to meet Knight in the car park of Mordialloc Railway Station late one August night, and remembers the drive in Knight's Mazda MX6 being quite short.

Rumours abound that Neurocam issued assignments to Operatives Crest and Learmonth which involved searching the rubbish bins of certain Sydney offices. Operatives were instructed to report findings to Mr Winston Gregory via one of the regular Neruocam drop-off points (supposedly located in the waiting room of a Kings Cross brothel). Who is Winston Gregory? This is a name we have thus far not heard mention of in relation to Neurocam.
